Easy to see why we hibernate at this time of the year - might have to find a second pair of thermals for the winter chase of the salmon when Terry sends out the word that they have settled in one area of the peninsula. Then we can our winter saltwater skills.

Winter is upon us and the streams are closed for spawning and stream recovery. Time to think of next season and new flies – so watch this space for new dates for fly tying sessions.

Just back home after a pleasant Sunday morning with Peter Wilson who ran a very informative morning of casting instruction at Mt Eliza Regional Park. Boy he makes it look easy!

Annual Dinner 2014
Forty members were present at Frankston International for the 16th Annual Dinner of MPFF Inc.
In the traditions of the Cub a huge array of prizes were displayed and ticket sales were brisk for the monster raffle.
President Russ welcomed our guests including Gavin Hurley and his wife and all present enjoyed a delightful buffet meal and good company.

The John McKay Memorial Award 2014 Club Member of the Year was presented to Ian Herron. Ian took on the office of Secretary at the last AGM and has ensured all members are kept up to date via email, website and monthly newsletters.
Undoubtedly the highlight of the night was the granting on the Club’s first Life Membership to David Johnston. David is a foundation member who served as President for 5 years and has been a committee member for almost all of the past sixteen years. Well deserved recognition of all the outstanding service given to the Club. Congratulations Dave!

School holidays, Easter, Anzac Day, footy, picking grapes -Â well for me anyway -Â and trying to get in a little fly fishing. It must be autumn! Well at least day and night has been returned to its proper time!

Just back from a Club Trip and one question asked was – “ÂHow come we don’t get more members to Club outings?” Your committee is trying to meet all of your needs in fly fishing if it is possible.

Eildon Region Club Trip
The weather was great as five intrepid MPFF’rs headed up to the Eildon Pondage all arriving about midday on Friday 14th. There was much cursing as our group of campers tried to drive pegs into soil the consistency of dried concrete. After setting up camp everyone headed off in all directions to find some fishy water. What a”bummer” – the pondage at its peak and the Goulburn running a banker – never been seen that high before, by any of the team! We made a few attempts to fish the pondage and then retired to camp to formulate a battle plan for Saturday accompanied by a cold beverage.

Saturday dawned another beautiful day and it was off to Big River. Sam, Terry, Frank and Pete were first to arrive - Steve and Russ “tail end charlies” so they moved on down river and the battle began. Terry caught 3 on the Taponga, Steve caught 3 on Big River whilst Russ caught one and dropped one - all before lunch. After lunch not a fish was sighted anywhere!

Saturday night “huey” turned on a thunder and lightning show to be believed and to finish it off torrents of rain and a huge water run-off through the campsite. As luck would have it our small group had gathered in the camp kitchen undercover with ample provisions to wait out the flood.
Sunday saw most rivers on the rise and dirty water was abundant. Steve and Russ fished the Steavenson after looking at a number of spots on the return homeââ¬âbut in the end coffee and a pie at Marysville seemed the best option.

Lake Wendouree Two Fly Competition: 29-30 March 2014

Incorporating the Jim Thomas Memorial Trophy, this event is being run by the Ballarat Flyfishers Club. It’s a catch-and-release competition too, which is great to see. The Lake Wendouree Two Fly celebrates the historical significance of Lake Wendouree and its trout fishery to the Ballarat Flyfishers, the City of Ballarat and the lake’s contribution to Victoria’s flyfishing history and traditions.
The competition will be held over 2 days (29th /30th March), and it incorporate a gala dinner and raffle, with auction proceeds to support those BFFC members competing in international events.
Anthony McGrath came third in last year’s comp. with this great fish.
The cost of entering the event will be $50 per flyfisher. This includes entry to the event, a 2 course dinner at the Saturday night Gala event and breakfast on Sunday morning. The number of flyfishers able to enter the event will be limited to 80 to ensure the quality of the fishing and to provide access to adequate fishing areas on the lake. As well as the Jim Thomas Memorial Trophy, the winner gets a Stalker Glide 6 weight fly rod valued at $500.
Despite the recent hot dry weather, I had a look at Lake Wendouree yesterday and it’s in great condition full and clear. By the end of March, flyfishing conditions should be excellent.
Wendouree is in great shape and should fish well in late March.
